MetService, FuseworksMay 16, 2012, 2:28 pm A cold southwest flow should cover the country on Friday, with a number of fronts embedded within this flow. There is likely to be some snow above 400-500 metres in Southland, Fiordland, Clutha and parts of Dunedin Thursday night and Friday morning, and about Banks Peninsula and the Marlborough Ranges on Friday. Brief snow flurries are also possible about the Desert and Rimutaka Hill Roads on Friday night and Saturday morning. At this stage, amounts in these areas are not forecast to be enough to require a warning, but flurries may affect higher roads. Strong southwesterlies are expected to strengthen along the east coast for a time during Thursday night and Friday as a cold front moves northward. About coastal areas of eastern Southland and Clutha, including Stewart Island and the Otago Peninsula, there is low confidence that southwest winds may reach warning criteria early Friday morning. A narrow ridge is expected to move east over the country on Saturday. On Sunday, a trough is expected to cross New Zealand with some rain, especially in western areas. However, this is not expected to reach warning levels. On Monday, a ridge spreads over the South Island and a southerly flow develops over the North Island with some rain in eastern areas. nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/13699281/cold-front-to-bring-snow/
