State Highway 1 between Turangi and Taupo is by flooding, while councils are monitoring high river levels and clearing slips after heavy rain moved up the North Island on Monday.
But the MetService says the wind and rain of recent days is just about over.
Motorists heading north of New Plymouth on State Highway 3 were also warned to expect delays because of a slip on the highway about 200 metres north of the Awakino Hotel.
Sergeant Andy Dow from police communications said the slip blocked both lanes.
Horizons Regional Council emergency management staff are monitoring river levels through the night with the Whanganui River expected to peak at Pipiriki at 10.45pm.
The peak of 10.5 metres is lower than originally forecast and is expected to pass freely under the Whanganui town bridge on Tuesday morning.
Horizons emergency manager Shane Bayley says we will continue to work closely with the Whanganui District Council to monitor river levels and keep an eye on things throughout the night.
Blenheim Police had to appeal for the occupants of BMW car caught in floodwaters to come forward to establish that they were safe and well.
A Fire Service spokesman told NZ Newswire there were only a few extra calls in the central region because of the heavy rain in the region.
State Highway 6 from Westport to Greymouth reopened after the road closure cut Westport off over the weekend.
MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett says a large high is expected to move onto New Zealand during Tuesday and then bring settled weather to most places for the rest of the week.
"Some parts of New Zealand have had a lot of rainfall over the last few days, and this will give them a chance to dry out a bit."
The respite could extend to the weekend.
