Severe thunderstorms predicted for last night in parts of the central North Island are now expected to hit later today. Yesterday MetService issued a warning for torrential rain in parts of the central North Island, which it had expected to strike last night. The weather forecaster said thunderstorms and torrential rain were now expected to affect inland areas of Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, and eastern areas of Bay of Plenty, Taupo and Taihape. In some areas, rainfall intensity could reach 25 - 40 millimetres an hour, which could cause flash flooding and slips. Hail is also possible, and MetService warned driving conditions would also be hazardous with flooded roads, and poor visibility. www.msn.com/en-nz/news/national/storms-to-strike-central-ni-later-today/ar-BBoSCHJ?ocid=spartanntp
