AccuWeather reports that Starkweather, N.D., and Rocky Boy, Mont., have already picked up 10 inches of snow. Yesterday, Calgary, Alberta, received about a foot of snow from the storm. Including Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Many cities will likely see their biggest snowstorm of the winter season. Snowfall accumulations today and Tuesday should be from 6-12 inches from Fargo, N.D. through Minneapolis, Minn., through the southern suburbs of Chicago, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Edwards. By Wednesday, the storm could bring significant snow to Washington D.C. and Baltimore metro areas. By Wednesday, the storm will head east, spreading heavy snow in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, and Virginia, reports Weather Channel meteorologist Jon Erdman, who says the snow will be heavy and wet, which, along with high winds, could lead to power outages. www.crh.noaa.gov/bis/ www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2013/03/04/winter-storm-midwest-midatlantic/1961753/

A winter storm swept over Washington, D.C. today, forcing federal offices to close and threatening to dump 4 to 8 inches of snow — the heaviest in Washington in two years. “It will be a wet, heavy, gloppy snow consistent with wallpaper paste,” National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro said. More than 1,100 flights were canceled at Reagan National airport and Washington Dulles, and power outages were expected in some parts of Virginia. Meanwhile, in the Chicago suburbs, part of the roof of a banquet hall caved in, and snow poured into one wing of the building. usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/06/17205699-wallpaper-paste-snowstorm-shuts-down-nations-capital?lite

March 22, 2013 – AUSTRALIA - Two Australian men made a dramatic escape from a tornado in New South Wales after the twister touched down only meters from their car. Daniel Clarke, 24, told Australia’s 7 News channel how he was driving from the town of Mulwala to nearby Barooga when the tornado, which was around 50 meters wide at its base, appeared in a field next to them. Nearby power lines exploded with a blue flash as they were hit by the whirling column of air. With rain and debris hammering the windscreen as the tornado advances towards them, Mr. Clarke reverses at speed before performing a hand-brake turn in the road. But the twister continues to barrel through the adjoining field, travelling almost parallel to their car at a speed of approximately 50mph. -Telegraph

March 22, 2013 – CHINA - At least 24 people died and scores were injured after a tornado carrying huge hailstones lashed southern China, causing widespread devastation and a ferry to capsize, domestic media reported Thursday. The ferry overturned in a river in the south-eastern province of Fujian, causing the deaths of 11 people with four missing, web portal qq.com reported. Nine people were killed in Dongguan, in Guangdong province in the south, according to the report. It showed images from the city of a car windscreen which appeared to have been smashed by egg-sized hailstones. Many of the dead in Dongguan were trapped in collapsed buildings. Another 148 people were injured, including 11 who were critically ill, the report said. The website put the death toll at 24, as did state-run news agency Xinhua. Other provinces affected by storms and torrential rain on Wednesday were nearby Jiangxi, Hunan in central China and Guizhou in the southwest. A total of 1.53 million residents have been affected by severe weather and 215,000 people were forced to relocate, Xinhua said, citing the Ministry of Civil Affairs. More storms bringing rain, wind and hail are forecast for the south of the country over the next three days, Xinhua reported on Thursday night, citing the National Meteorological Centre. -SD

“This weather is for the March truly extraordinary,” says Frank Boettcher from the Institute of Weather and Climate Communication. “In Hamburg, there was an average of 3.5 degrees colder than normal.” And the snow! Even snowplows voiced concern over the snow, which blocked roads and caused countless jams. In Fuhlsbüttel a new all-time snow record for the month of March was set: 28 inches! The former Hamburg snow-in-March-peak value of 1 March 1979 was 27 centimeters. And it gets worse! Ostholstein on Tuesday should get up to 15 centimeters of new snow. In Hamburg, it can be up to five. “In the middle of next week, we do not expect significant changes,” says Boettcher. “It is even possible that this weather lasts until Easter.” www.mopo.de/nachrichten/hamburger-endlos-winter-ende-der-eiszeit-nicht-in-sicht,5067140,22154502.html
